Cheek implants have the ability to restore youthful plumpness, add volume, and create definition for the mid-face. They’re a great option for individuals with a narrow or flat face, or who have lost cheek contour due to age, congenital deficiency, disease, or injury.
What are cheek implants?
Although frequently overlooked, the cheeks play a big role in the balance and attractiveness of the face. Having too much volume in this area can add weight and heaviness, and having too little volume can make you appear gaunt and aged.
Dr. Halaas’s surgical enhancement of the cheeks uses facial implants to restore or create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Cheek implants are often done in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as a facelift or chin augmentation, but can also be done as a stand-alone procedure.
Types of cheek implants
Malar implants
Malar implants are placed on the cheekbones to provide projection to the cheekbones with higher contour to the side of the face.
Sub-malar implants
Sub-malar implants are not placed on the cheekbones, but are instead used to augment the mid-face to improve a gaunt or hollowed appearance in this area.
Combined implants
Malar and sub-malar implants can be combined to augment both the cheekbones and mid-face, providing enhanced, natural-looking volume and definition.
Cheek augmentation surgical details
Cheek implants can be inserted through an upper mouth incision near the top of the gum line, or through an external incision near the eye.
There are risks and benefits to both methods. When placing the implant through inside the mouth, there is no scar left behind.
However, there’s a greater risk of infection based on bacteria in the oral cavity. With the external incision near the eye, there is a scar left, but the risk of infection is less likely. Your choice of which incision will be used can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Halaas. Recovery time from cheek implants is approximately ten days.
